Leadership Lessons From My Mother

Ask others to name the most influential people in their life, and there’s a good chance that their mother will be near the top of the list. Our moms have been present in our lives from the very beginning–and, if you stop to think about it, just about every lesson we learn in life originated in one way or another with her. Her words taught us to be better leaders. She shaped our lives profoundly–and still does. In honor of her on Mother’s Day and every day, let’s revisit some of Mom’s enduring leadership concepts. 1. Leaders put their hearts and souls at the service of their people and their purpose: Leaders care about their people and their purpose. They invest themselves fully in their people and their goal, knowing that in the long run, all the time and energy is worth it. And that's the case of a mother who invests her whole life in her children and their success. 2. Leaders hold people to a higher standard: While moms are very loving, they also know that a big part of their responsibility is to empower people. They are willing to take difficult but often unpopular positions for the good of their children. 3 Leaders are proud and religious: If you are like most of us, your mother was a source of unconditional pride. And that pride reassured you that you could do better and gave you support when we failed. Today, as an adult, showing others that you are proud of them and that you believe in them is the best way to pass on that gift. 4. Leaders remember and appreciate the little things : Leaders pay attention to the little things that make a BIG difference. They realize that it is the little things you do regularly that make the strongest connections. Just like a mom who is happy and shows it with a simple little thing. 5. Leaders keep all of this in perspective. Finally, leaders are able to keep everything in perspective. They are fully engaged but are also able to keep their priorities in order. Successful mothers keep it all in perspective because they are able to separate the important from the urgent and spend their time accordingly.
